New Orleans Jazz - News and Sights - Sammy Penn

SAMMY PENN: Born Morgan City Louisiana September 15 1902. Died Florida September 18 1969.

Let us begin just a little in a different way this time around: in my experience, the finest New Orleans drummers in my pleasure were Baby Dodds, Sammy Penn and Cie Frazier. But Sammy were built with a wonderful second string to his bow. He sang with similar phrasing because the legendary Fats Domino, with his large cigar and big smile would be a master performer.

Baby Game

Sammy's first job was at 1921 with Mike Johnson's band, then with Chris Kelly's Brass Band, Kid Rena's Brass Band and also the legendary Eureka Brass Band. He was the mainstay from the Kid Thomas band for any quarter of the century.

You must realise that entertainment was the title of the overall game. With Sammy Penn and Joe "Twat" Butler, Kid Thomas Valentine were built with a showband. Performers, personas and Thomas together with his famous "bag of methods" No surprise this band made it in New Orleans after which together with the planet to represent the birthplace of jazz.

Inside a lengthy interview with my pal Tom Stagg in the wonderful record shop "Good Rockin'" he describes Sammy Penn's drum package as "ultra fundamental" A bass drum, a snare drum, a tom-tom along with a cymbal connected to the bass drum. As Tom takes note of, he drove this guitar rock band non-stop with an incredible complexity of rhythmic sounds. This package was simple however the rhythm was not!

This really is Tom's recollection from the last days of his existence. "Sammy came back from the doctor's appointment using the news he had high bloodstream pressure and heart murmurs. Sammy performed at Upkeep Hall that evening after another session using the Kid Thomas Band loaded their gear onto a bus outdoors the Hall on St. Peters Street and hang served by Sammy for any tour through Georgia to Florida. For only one concert, public transit came back towards the Hall with just the driver, the street manager and the entire body of Sammy Penn.

Speaking to Craig Martyn, he rates Sammy Penn highly in great drummers from New Orleans. Sammy performed 4/4 around the bass drum and never the greater familiar cut duration of New Orleans drummers. George Lewis preferred that 4/4 seem and Joe Watkins performed this way, but with no explosive accents and sophisticated tempos of Sammy Penn. Craig had the great fortune to sit down along with the little one Thomas Band and located he couldn't hear themself and needed to adjust his volume and elegance to match this guitar rock band.

So Sammy Penn was the drummer for Kid Thomas and the Algiers Stompers and spent the main issue with his playing existence with this band. As Craig Martyn stated "When Joe James and Sammy died this guitar rock band would not be rather exactly the same again"

To listen to him at his best, you need to pay attention to "Kid Thomas Valentine Creole Jazz Band on American Music AMCD 49 and "Kid Thomas and the Algiers Stompers" on Riverside OJCCD 1833-2. My great pleasure is really seeing the guy for action on the DVD from the December Band created by Large Bill Bissonnette (possibly still available by getting in touch with him on his Jazz Campaign website - jazzcrusade.com).

Sammy Penn would be a one-off and we're lucky to possess records to hear. Around Australia, the late great Peter Clohesy was affected by him as well as in Europe both Keith Minter, Emile Martyn and Chris Marchant show indications of getting took in for this "original".

My next opus is going to be a job interview with L'ensemble des Muscutt -an excellent banjo player in the U.K. who designed a huge impression around the New Orleans jazz scene. Because of sickness, he upon the market lately and Home theater system . will discover his story interesting! P.S. A final minute call from Craig Martyn to state that his latest video on American Music AMVD4 will feature Kid Thomas with Sammy Penn, as well as the Kid Howard band and lots of other good stuff!
